Welcome to the Norwich Bookstore!
We are proudly independent and locally owned! The Norwich Bookstore honors the fact that we are part of the vibrant and vital Upper Valley Community by actively supporting local non-profit organizations through our Rewards Program. Founding members of Local First Vermont, we believe in the principles of sustainability.

You can now shop with us on the internet 24/7 — the convenience of shopping at home while supporting your locally owned and independent bookstore at the same time! Our website offers you the option of having books mailed to you or picking them up at the store. The website may say that a book is a “special order” and not immediately available when, in fact, we have it on the shelf. We are working on this glitch, so please call or email if there is a title you need quickly.

Recently a customer told us that the Norwich Bookstore was her favorite “personal search engine” because we helped her find just the right book to read or as to give as a gift — even when details about the title were as vague as “it was blue and on the display by the door last week” or “I read about it somewhere” . . . or as specific as “he only reads about the Civil War so it has to have been published in the past two months.” We thoroughly enjoy matching books and readers with our used and out-of-print book service there is rarely a title we can’t find for you.

Over the years we have developed wonderful working relationships with organizations in the region that host authors in settings outside of the bookstore. This fall is busy with a new Vermont Humanities Council series on the first Wednesdays of the month. Terry Tempest Williams will be visiting Dartmouth College. And David Macaulay, who now lives in Norwich, has a new book that will be the cornerstone of a unique ten-day fundraising event hosted by the Norwich Public Library.

We hope you join us for the many exciting book events this fall. Enjoy the changing seasons . . .

Liza & Penny

We are open every day - with the exception of a few holidays each year. We will be closed November 27th for Thanksgiving. We close at 3 pm on Christmas Eve and are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, December 26th to give our staff a well deserved rest.

Events are free and informal (unless otherwise noted), and everyone is warmly invited to attend. Because seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis, we strongly recommend calling or emailing ahead to reserve a seat. We are happy to arrange to have a book signed even if you cannot attend.

Quote of the Day
"True literature can exist only where it is created, not by diligent and trustworthy officials, but by madmen, hermits, heretics, dreamers, rebels, and skeptics."

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Barrows, Annie Fiery, Shaffer, Mary Ann Fiery
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society is a gem. Just after WWII a writer is contacted by a fan on the island of Guernsey. As events unfold and she goes to Guernsey, she learns of the misery, bravery and ingenuity of the locals when Guernsey was abandoned by the British to be captured by the Germans. Because it's told in letters, it's bound to be compared it to 84 Charing Cross Road. But Guernsey Literary is like no other book I've ever read and it's outstanding.--Elaine Petrocelli, Book Passage (Corte Madera, CA)
